Coffee for Molly

Coffee for Molly was inspired by Molly’s love of making coffee for her friends and family as a way to raise awareness of the vital importance of talking about mental wellbeing in safe spaces. As part of this concept we developed a mnemonic using Molly’s name with helpful pointers on how to open a conversation.

You can hold a get-together and share ‘Coffee for Molly’ at your workplace, community group, school or with a group of friends to share this message, raise funds and start important conversations about mental wellbeing.

What is the MOLLY mnemonic?

To help you start an open conversation here is a helpful mnemonic that spells out MOLLY.

  • MAKE TIME – we tend to lead busy lives but we must never forget the importance of making time for each other.
  • OPEN A CONVERSATION – Not always an easy thing to do, but starting a difficult conversation can do significant good rather than cause harm.
  • LISTEN – actively listen to the person by giving them your undivided attention. Reflecting on the words they have been saying is likely to allow them to open up more.
  • LET THEM TALK – Leave any questions or comments until the person has finished talking so you don’t interrupt and prevent them from speaking up.
  • YOU’RE MAKING A DIFFERENCE – Poor mental health can affect anyone at anytime just like poor physical health. Talking about it is the first step towards recovery and our help cards can signpost to further sources of support.

How do I hold a Coffee for Molly get-together?

You could hold a Coffee for Molly morning, lunch break or afternoon tea at your workplace, community group, local coffee shop or even at home. The most important thing is to gather friends and colleagues together and create a safe space for open conversations about mental wellbeing. Here are some ideas to get your Coffee for Molly event started:

  • Bring your own cakes – encourage everyone to bring in their favourite treat as part of a Coffee for Molly event you could even make it a competition.
  • Talk with someone new – this is a great opportunity to speak with colleagues you might otherwise not get a chance to, as part of your Coffee for Molly event consider setting up randomised conversation groups or pairs
  • Host a virtual Coffee Morning – for teams who work remotely you can host a virtual Coffee for Molly morning and encourage everyone to make themselves a drink and turn off their emails as they head onto a team call to have a conversation.

How do I start a conversation?

We have created a downloadable information sheet that will help to guide your conversations with useful tips, advice and examples.

How will Molly Rose Foundation support me?

We have a range of Coffee for Molly materials that we could provide you with to help run your event including information leaflets, coasters, help cards and more.
