Online Safety Bill to be watered down by the removal of measures to take down material designated ‘harmful but legal’.

The Molly Rose Foundation is disappointed that the Online Safety Bill is to be watered down by the removal of measures that would have forced social media sites to take down material designated ‘harmful but legal’.

However, if this is necessary to ensure the Bill is in the House of Lords by Christmas, we accept this on the basis it will finally be passed into legislation.

Once it is passed, amendments can always be made later. Given that social media platforms will continue to evolve, we feel it will be imperative for the legislation enacted by the Bill to evolve with them to ensure young people are kept safe when online.

Freedom of speech is an important issue but, this isn’t about freedom of speech, it’s about the freedom to live.
